The Wild Places We Call Home: Exploring the Reserves Behind Our Safari Experiences

July 16, 2026

One of the most important parts of every memorable safari is the landscape itself. The reserve in which a lodge is located plays a significant role in shaping every safari experience. From the density of wildlife and the variety of habitats to the style of game viewing and conservation initiatives, every reserve has its own unique character.

Across the Sun Destinations portfolio, our properties are situated within some of South Africa’s most remarkable protected wilderness areas. While they all form part of a broader conservation story, each reserve offers something distinctive for guests to discover.

So why does location matter on safari?

No two safari destinations are exactly alike. Although many reserves are connected through larger conservation landscapes, differences in terrain, vegetation, water sources, and wildlife management create unique experiences.

Understanding where your safari takes place helps you appreciate not only the wildlife you’ll encounter, but also the conservation efforts that protect these landscapes for generations to come.

The Greater Kruger ecosystem

Several Sun Destinations are located within the Greater Kruger ecosystem, one of Africa’s largest and most significant conservation areas.

The Greater Kruger extends beyond the boundaries of the Kruger National Park, incorporating various private nature reserves where wildlife moves freely across unfenced landscapes. This creates an enormous wilderness spanning millions of hectares, allowing animals to follow natural migration routes and seasonal movements.

For guests, this means authentic wildlife encounters within thriving ecosystems where conservation takes priority, and every game drive offers something different.

The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

Home to Africa on Foot and nThambo Tree Camp, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is one of the largest privately owned reserves within the Greater Kruger.

The Klaserie is known for its low vehicle density and uncrowded safari experience. It offers exceptional opportunities to enjoy wildlife without large numbers of vehicles around the sightings. The reserve supports healthy populations of the Big Five alongside cheetah, African wild dog, hyena, numerous antelope species, and an impressive diversity of birdlife.

For guests choosing to stay here, the atmosphere feels wonderfully wild and peaceful, making every encounter feel personal and immersive.

The Balule and the Maseke Balule Game Reserve

The Balule Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem and is one of the largest private reserves connected to the Kruger National Park. Within the Sun Destinations portfolio, the Balule is home to Nyala Safari Lodge

The Balule is celebrated for its healthy populations of the Big Five, diverse birdlife, and authentic safari experiences away from the crowds. Its varied landscapes, from open savannahs and riverine forests to dense bushveld, support an incredible variety of wildlife throughout the year.

The Maseke forms part of the greater Balule conservation area, which operates as a distinct section with its own identity and management. Chacma Bush Camp and Africa On Foot Wilderness Trails can be found in the Maseke Balule Reserve.

Unlike the central sections of the Balule, Maseke offers a quieter, more exclusive safari experience with fewer lodges and vehicles operating within the reserve. This lowers the tourism footprint and creates a greater sense of solitude, allowing guests to enjoy wildlife encounters in a more intimate setting.

For guests, the Balule offers the best of both worlds: access to one of Africa’s most celebrated ecosystems while enjoying a peaceful safari experience that feels wonderfully off the beaten track.

Olifants West Nature Reserve

Situated west of the Olifants River, the Olifants West Nature Reserve is home to Nambu Camp and is another important part of the Greater Kruger conservation landscape.

The Olifants West Nature Reserve combines scenic bushveld, riverine vegetation, and open plains that support a rich diversity of wildlife. Guests can expect excellent opportunities to encounter elephants, giraffes, plains game, predators, and an abundance of birdlife.

Its quieter atmosphere and beautiful scenery create a relaxed safari experience where nature takes centre stage.

The Sabi Game Reserve

Few safari destinations are as iconic as the Sabi Game Reserve, home to Umkumbe Safari Lodge Riverside. It is world-renowned for its exceptional wildlife viewing. Sabi shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, allowing animals to move freely between the two protected areas.

The reserve is particularly famous for its remarkable leopard sightings. Combined with healthy populations of lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and countless other species, the Sabi consistently delivers unforgettable game viewing experiences.

Umkumbe Safari Lodge offers guests the opportunity to experience this legendary wilderness firsthand.

The Selati offers an intimate safari experience where guests can enjoy diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife and a strong sense of tranquillity away from busier tourist areas.

The reserve’s combination of woodlands, open grasslands, and water sources supports a wide range of mammals and birdlife, creating rewarding game drives throughout the seasons.

  • Diverse wildlife encounters that change with the seasons and every game drive.
  • Beautiful natural landscapes ranging from open savannahs and dense woodlands to river systems and rocky outcrops.
  • Smaller, more intimate safari experiences that allow guests to connect with nature at a slower pace.

Every reserve offers its own surprises, ensuring that no two safaris are ever the same.

Conservation at the heart of every safari

These protected areas exist because of decades of collaboration between conservation organisations, reserve management teams, landowners, guides, researchers, and local communities.

By choosing to visit private game reserves, guests directly support conservation through tourism. Every stay helps sustain the ecosystems, wildlife, and dedicated people working tirelessly to preserve these extraordinary places.

Discover the wild places behind every safari
