Every safari has its own characteristics that make it special. At Ngonyam Safari Lodge, the feeling of connection stays with you long after you leave.
Nestled within the Makalali Private Nature Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa, Ngonyam is the newest addition to the Sun Destinations collection. This intimate, family-run camp offers an authentic safari experience where the pace is slower, the hospitality is personal, and the wilderness remains at the centre of every moment.

A place where the bush sets the pace
Tucked away on the banks of the Ngonyam Dam, the lodge is nestled within 25,000 hectares of protected wilderness in the Greater Kruger ecosystem. Surrounded by untamed bushveld, guests can immerse themselves in an authentic safari experience where Big Five sightings, spectacular scenery, and the rhythms of nature take centre stage.
Mornings begin before sunrise when heading on a guided game drive. As the reserve awakens, guests can search for the Big Five while taking in the sights, sounds, and changing colours of the wilderness. And don’t forget the morning coffee stop, where you stop along the route for coffee, rusks and a stunning view.

Back at the lodge, the day slows. Time is spent enjoying leisurely breakfasts, relaxing beside the beautiful pool, watching wildlife visit the Ngonyam dam, or simply appreciating the tranquillity that comes with being surrounded by nature.
In the late afternoon, it’s time for another game drive, this time with a sundowner stop as the sun dips below the horizon. Evenings are spent around the campfire in the boma area, sharing stories beneath a canopy of stars while the sounds of the bush provide the soundtrack.

Small by design, personal by nature
Ngonyam accommodates only six guests across three tented chalets, creating an experience that feels exclusive without being formal.
Every spacious chalet has been thoughtfully designed to blend comfort with a close connection to the surrounding environment. Guests can enjoy king-size beds, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, indoor and outdoor showers, a bathtub, and private en-suite facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay while remaining immersed in the wilderness.
Because the camp is so intimate, guests can enjoy a highly personalised experience. Guests are welcomed like family, with genuine hospitality shaped by generations of knowledge and a deep connection to the land.

Wildlife encounters throughout the year
Makalali Private Nature Reserve offers excellent year-round game viewing, with each season bringing something different.
The reserve is home to the Big Five (the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) as well as giraffe, zebra, impala, waterbuck, and baboon, amongst others. Predators such as hyena and cheetah are also occasionally encountered.

Bird enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy, particularly around Ngonyam Dam, where kingfishers, fish eagles, hornbills, rollers, and a variety of waterbirds are regularly spotted.
Because wildlife movements are shaped by the seasons and natural conditions, no two game drives are ever the same. Each outing offers the possibility of something unexpected.
